CK DeLeon, the author in me, was born when I was a small child watching my Grandma find peace on Sunday afternoons while spending hours rocking back and forth and solving word puzzles.
A wisp of a smile adorned her face. As she hummed triumphantly in a serene moment, she circled a clue.
One spring afternoon, I held the book up and asked, “Grandma, when do you plan to work on the puzzle book I gave you for Christmas?”
“It’s a delightful book, honey,” she said, “but these tired old eyes struggle with the squiggly words without my magnifying glass.” Despite her fondness for puzzle books, she could not see the small print due to vision issues prevalent with old eyes.
Grandma stopped rocking and said, “I have an idea; you finish it and bring it back when you do!”
I have always wanted to solve a word puzzle with Gramma; now, I can solve one for her. Wide-eyed, I opened the book to the first empty puzzle and could see it fine. I did finish that first book and hundreds more in the ensuing years.
With that humble beginning, Gramma instilled within me a love for words. I wrote short stories that Boys Life did not accept, and I did not qualify for any of my comic book submissions. I often wrote poems at women’s request in what we called ‘The Infirmary,’ a nursing home today.
Gramma worked there and shared a poem I wrote for her with the patients. The next day, she asked me to write one for Mrs. Davidson. A week later, I had requests for five more. Then I met Isaac Asimov and read about other worlds, and I was hooked. Words could take you anywhere. And I happily went.
Now, I am the author.
I am the author with old eyes, publishing books that don’t require anyone to squint or grab a magnifying glass to make sense of the little squiggles.
