“Grandma said, ‘When you have something heavy on your mind, make the call.
Have you ever stared at your to-do list until it blurred, sat in traffic with your mind spinning, or lain in bed thinking, “I can’t do all this?” If so, you’re not alone.
Women often carry silent loads, mental tabs open at all hours, juggling family, relationships, health, and unspoken emotional stress.
We’ve been conditioned to push through, to figure it out on our own, to be the calm in every storm. However, sometimes the most effective solution isn’t to “power through” at all.
I learned a lesson forty years ago at a ‘How to Buy Real Estate with No Money Down’ seminar in San Francisco. The speaker’s message and flyer were unpretentious, almost too simple: It was not a mistake that the exact words, “Make the Call!” were on his business card.
Make the Call!
When you’re facing a problem or challenge, don’t stew in it. Don’t agonize over solving it by yourself. Don’t pretend it’s not heavy. Sometimes, the answer is to “Reach out to someone!” Make a call, or in modern times, send a text, email, or post on IG, you get the idea.
The speaker kept saying throughout the seminar, “I am not a guru, but if I were, I would tell you to pick up the phone and call the number of the person or business that can provide answers to your questions. If the issue is bothering you, make the call.”
It sounded so obvious I glossed over the advice, but, to my credit, I did write that note down. Later in life, his recommendation was worth the cost many times over. What I passed off as seminar ‘filler’ in my thirties came back to mind when I needed it most in my mid-forties.
Don’t Miss this Opportunity
The onstage, seminar guru of our generation, akin to today’s online influencers, shared random or specific knowledge to relieve us of our dollars.
I found it hard to concentrate on what he was saying, because I was waiting for the ‘touch’, the moment he hit us up for money.
When he finally came for my wallet’s contents during the break, I packed up my notes and sped across the bay bridge, to the echo of his voice telling me I was losing out.
Years later, when I needed them most, those notes reappeared, so I gave the theory a shot. I followed the guru’s advice and reached out to friends, family, colleagues, and even creditors once. Amazingly, the weight shifted off my shoulders almost instantly.
Not because the problem disappeared, but because I no longer carried it alone.
That five-minute call might be awkward or emotional. But by the end of the call, you have something powerful: the results of a connection with another human. And often, that simple connection brings with it the freedom to breathe again.
What happens when we reach out?
- The loop of overthinking decreases as our stress level decreases.
- Another voice offers new perspectives and solutions appear.
- When we share the load, it’s lighter, and we feel less isolated.
- When we know where we stand, good or bad, we are not in the dark.
- Allies, friends, family, and strangers have one thing in common. We are human.
Yes, you’re strong and mostly silent, but you don’t have to carry the weight all alone. When life feels heavy and you need answers, pause and breathe. Then call someone.
This isn’t venting or oversharing. It’s refusing to shoulder the weight of life in isolation.
You don’t need perfect words or a plan. If you had it figured out, you wouldn’t be wondering who to call.
Humans Help Humans
Trust your gut; reach out to whoever quietly enters your mind. It may be a friend or a business. You might be surprised by how much lighter the world feels once you stop trying to hold it up alone.
There’s peace in connection. Find it.
