Saturday Love: The “Day Off” That Rarely Is
While looking forward to Saturday love, we must navigate the Monday-through-Friday sabotage. Life is always setting us up. All we want to do is make it through until Saturday, and all will be well. Then on that much-needed day of rest, we wake up.
For many people, Saturday isn’t a slow, quiet morning with coffee and relaxation; it’s the one day to squeeze in everything that waited patiently all week. By the time Saturday arrives, we’re often staring at a list that grows longer while we are reading it.
Now is the day we race to catch up on everything we didn’t have time for during the week. It arrives with a list of chores a mile long, with no end in sight, and limited time to complete them.
Saturday is Not a Day of Rest
Even though Saturday may not feel restful, it is still meaningful. Doing chores is one way you care for your home, your family, and yourself, but it can be overwhelming.
The Meaning of Saturday Love
Saturday isn’t stressful because of the chores alone; it’s stressful because we wake up and try to fit a whole week of “life maintenance” into a single day, by deciphering:
- The mental load: remembering what needs doing, deciding what matters most
- The emotional pressure: comes from wanting a clean, peaceful house, but needing rest
- The juggling act: is trying to maintain personal time while caring for family
- The shared burden: chores don’t belong to one person, or do they?
If your to-do list is long this Saturday, take it one task at a time. You’re already doing more than you thought. Remember to pause. Rest for as long as you need. Step outside. Breathe deeply (at least three breaths). You deserve calm in the midst of the chaos.
From piles of laundry to grocery runs to deep cleaning your home, Saturdays can feel less like a break and more like a marathon. And, sometimes, a few of us have actual marathons to run in. Add THAT to your calendar.
And, to think: all week, every week, we look forward to this one day that we’ll get to play catch-up. Then we don’t, and that’s okay.
Why? Because tomorrow is Sunday! A day to chill. For real.
Below are some common weekend priorities that we must attend to before we can chill out, which is what Saturday is supposed to be about: We guarantee you will wear many of these hats:
